Poetry Editor

New England Review’s Poetry Editor works with NER staff to shape the poetry section of the New England Review, evaluating NER’s unsolicited submissions alongside a team of readers and soliciting poetry and poetry in translation as needed. The Poetry Editor also serves as an advocate and representative of the magazine and its mission.
This is an independent contractor position, hired through Middlebury College.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review and respond to submissions in external system (Submittable)
- Recommend selections for inclusion in journal
- Provide feedback to volunteer readers on ad hoc basis
- Occasionally solicit writing from writers and translators
- Independently promote NER on social media and at conferences and events
- Participate in occasional informal editorial conversations with student interns
- Option to contribute to NER web features
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA, possibly also an MA, MFA, or PhD, in literature or related field
- Familiarity with the New England Review and the landscape of contemporary writing
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Some editorial experience with a literary magazine or publisher is helpful
PAYMENT of $2,750 per submissions period will be issued upon completion of work.
